Although it was freezing cold outside, it was spicy hot inside last Friday as twelve musicians performed Latin American music live in Balfour-Hood. Originating from such diverse places as Argentina, New Hampshire, Ohio, and Brazil, they united to give students a taste of South American musical culture.
Women of history often do not receive the recognition they deserve. However, a performace in the Chapel entitled "Tres Vidas" celebrated the lives and legacies of three extraordinary women: Frida Kahlo, the exalted Mexican painter; Rufina Amaya, an El Salvadorian activist; and Alfonsina Storni, an Argentinean poet.
Ani DiFranco certainly has never been a woman to conform to the norms of society. Her eighteen-year musical career has been characterized by unabashed creativity, unique vocals, powerful sentiments, and feminist pride. Her newest album delivers the same commanding DiFranco with an upbeat twist that allows her messages to be more accessible for contemplation.
