The Senate approved and released the 2008-2009 SGA budget allocations for clubs and organizations on April 22, approximately one month after the initial info sessions, said SGA Treasurer Taavi Raidma '08. Fifty-three percent of the $373,823 in requested funds was allocated for the upcoming year, thus bringing the approved allocation total for clubs and organizations to $197,344.
In total, 68 clubs and organizations applied for funding from the SGA, said Raidma: three clubs in the Communications Tier, 28 in the Education Tier, ten in the Intercultural Tier, and 27 in the Recreation Tier. Seven of those clubs were new to the tier allocation process. The Recreation Tier received the most funding with $74,344 allocated followed by the Education Tier with $59,000, Communication Tier with $35,000, and the Intercultural Tier with $29,000.
The allocation process, Raidma said, "started in the second half of March when the Finance Committee held information sessions for Wheaton's clubs and organizations. The budget proposals were due the 3rd of April, and the mandatory budget hearings were held the following week." The finance committee spent about fifteen hours overall deciding the allocations for the upcoming year.
The three clubs that received the most funding were The Wheaton Wire with $18,400, BACCHUS with $16,849, and the Equestrian Team with $16,014.
The three clubs allocated with the least amount of money were the Band Club with $100 and the Debate Team and the Math Club, which were both allocated $400.
Raidma said that allocations "were made based on the club's activity this academic year, the annual audits that were conducted in February, and most importantly the quality of the budget items in the proposal."
Clubs were also given a time to explain the items on their budget requests and to answer any questions that the finance committee may have had during the budget hearings.
The budget hearings for each of the clubs took three days in total. Because of financial constraints, he said, the committee was "unable to fund several larger campus events and conference visits." He encouraged clubs to "find alternative sources of funding for such items, (e.g. Venture Fund, Senate Fund, fundraising etc)".
"I was very pleased with the overall outcome of the process, and I thank everybody who was involved. Wheaton's student leaders are exceptional and it has been a pleasure to work with them throughout the year," Raidma said.
Raidma also thanked the Finance Committee members, Senators Philip Kiley '09, Alexander Kim '10, Reid Lavoie '09 and Zachary Ginsburg '10, for their work in finalizing allocations. Ginsburg will be serving as the SGA treasurer in the 2008-2009 academic year. Raidma also credited Director of Intramural Sports Dave Begley for his advice regarding allocations for clubs from the Recreation Tier.
